Biography
Amrita Banerjee grew up in a South Kolkata household where adda, the Bengali tradition of spirited intellectual conversation, was practically a daily ritual. Her father, a literature professor at Presidency University, and her mother, a documentary filmmaker, cultivated in Amrita a sharp analytical mind and a wicked sense of humour. She began performing in Kolkata's vibrant amateur theatre scene at fifteen, and by the time she entered Jadavpur University she was already directing her own productions. At Jadavpur, Amrita pursued a degree in Comparative Literature while simultaneously diving deep into scene study technique under the guidance of veteran Bengali theatre director Bratya Basu. Her thesis production, a Bengali adaptation of Chekhov's Three Sisters set in a crumbling Kolkata mansion, was performed to sold-out audiences and earned praise from the city's theatre critics. After graduation, she surprised everyone by pivoting to stand-up comedy, quickly establishing herself on Kolkata's emerging comedy circuit with material that blended literary references with sharp observations about Bengali middle-class life. Her film debut in Hashir Deshey (2023), a Bengali comedy-drama directed by Anik Dutta, was a natural extension of her dual talents. Playing a literature professor who moonlights as a stand-up comedian, Amrita brought a warmth and intelligence to the role that critics called "the most authentic portrayal of contemporary Kolkata on screen." She followed this with the Hindi web series Comedy Circuit, where she played a Bengali comedian trying to make it in Mumbai's comedy scene.
