Biography
Ananya Das grew up in the narrow lanes of North Kolkata, surrounded by the city's legendary intellectual and artistic energy. Her parents, both professors at Jadavpur University, encouraged her creative instincts from an early age. Ananya's first exposure to theatre came through the neighbourhood para culture, where she participated in annual Durga Puja stage productions. By her teens, she was writing and directing her own short plays for college festivals, and it was during one such production that acclaimed Bengali director Rituparno Sen noticed her raw talent.
Ananya pursued a B.A. in Theatre Studies from Rabindra Bharati University, where she immersed herself in the traditions of Bengali group theatre while simultaneously exploring avant-garde European physical theatre techniques. A scholarship to attend a three-month workshop at the Jacques Lecoq International Theatre School in Paris transformed her understanding of performance, introducing her to the power of the body as a storytelling instrument. She returned to Kolkata determined to fuse these influences.
Her film debut in Chena Achena (2022), a Bengali psychological drama directed by Srijit Mukherjee, showcased her ability to convey complex inner states through subtle physical expression. The film's fourteen-minute single-take climax, in which Ananya's character unravels emotionally without a single word of dialogue, became one of the most discussed scenes in recent Bengali cinema. She followed this with roles in the Hindi independent film Rang Birangi and the experimental Bengali feature Swapnolok.
Ananya is a firm believer in the democratizing power of improvisation, conducting free improv workshops for underprivileged youth in Kolkata's community centres. She sees theatre and cinema not merely as entertainment but as essential tools for social dialogue, and she actively seeks projects that challenge conventional narratives about gender, class, and identity in India.
