Biography
Deepika Joshi carries the colours and rhythms of Rajasthan wherever she goes. Raised in a haveli in Jaipur's old city, she grew up watching Ghoomar and Kalbeliya dancers perform at festivals and family celebrations, absorbing their grace and energy long before she understood it as art. Her grandmother, a respected Ghoomar practitioner, became her first teacher, and by fourteen Deepika was performing at the Jaipur Literature Festival and the Pushkar Mela, captivating audiences with her combination of technical precision and joyful abandon. After completing her B.A. in Performing Arts from the University of Rajasthan, Deepika's striking looks and commanding stage presence caught the attention of fashion photographer Dabboo Ratnani during a Lakme Fashion Week audition in Mumbai. Her modelling career took off quickly, with campaigns for major Indian fashion houses and appearances in Vogue India and Elle India. But Deepika saw modelling as a stepping stone, not a destination. She enrolled in the Barry John Acting Studio in Mumbai, training intensively for a year while continuing to model. Her acting debut in Rannbhoomi (2023), a Rajasthani-Hindi bilingual period drama directed by Ashutosh Gowariker's associate Mahesh Naik, was a revelation. Playing a Rajput princess who defies convention to lead her people, Deepika brought an authenticity to the folk dance sequences that no amount of choreography coaching could replicate. The film's success led to roles in the Hindi romance Pehla Nasha and the upcoming Rajasthani indie film Kesariya, where she plays a contemporary young woman navigating tradition and modernity in rural Rajasthan. Deepika is passionate about preserving Rajasthan's folk art traditions while making them accessible to younger audiences. She runs an Instagram series documenting dying folk dance forms and collaborates with rural artisan communities to bring their stories to a wider audience through film and social media.
