Biography
Karthik Subramanian is that rare breed of artist who is equally comfortable in front of and behind the camera. Born in Chennai to a family of engineers, Karthik's decision to pursue cinema was initially met with scepticism. But his determination was fuelled by countless hours spent at the Sathyam Cinemas watching the works of Mani Ratnam, Bala, and Vetrimaaran, directors who showed him that Tamil cinema could be both commercially viable and artistically uncompromising.
Karthik earned his degree in Visual Communication from Loyola College, Chennai, before gaining admission to the prestigious Film and Television Institute of India in Pune, where he specialized in cinematography. His FTII diploma film, Karuppu Veyil, won the institute's gold medal and was selected for screening at multiple international short film festivals. However, Karthik's ambitions extended beyond the viewfinder. He began taking acting classes on the side, studying under theatre director S. Ramanujam at the Koothu-P-Pattarai ensemble.
His acting debut came in Theriyatha Vilangu (2022), a Tamil thriller directed by Vetrimaaran's protege Manikandan, where Karthik played a conflicted photojournalist. The role allowed him to draw on his technical knowledge of camera work while delivering a nuanced emotional performance. He followed this with a supporting role in the Telugu-Tamil bilingual Sooravalai and directed his own debut short film, Oru Naal, which screened at the Cannes Short Film Corner.
Karthik sees himself as part of a new generation of South Indian filmmakers who refuse to be boxed into a single role. He is currently developing his first feature as writer-director while continuing to act in projects that challenge him creatively. His deep understanding of visual storytelling gives his performances a distinctive quality, an awareness of space, light, and composition that enriches every frame he inhabits.
