Biography
Kavitha Ramanathan began her artistic journey at the age of five in the temple town of Coimbatore, where her mother, a devout Bharatanatyam practitioner, first taught her the basic adavus in their modest courtyard. By twelve, Kavitha had already completed her arangetram at the prestigious Nataraj Temple auditorium and was performing at district-level cultural festivals across Tamil Nadu. Her early training instilled in her a discipline and reverence for classical form that would later become the bedrock of her acting career. After earning a B.A. in English Literature from PSG College of Arts and Science in Coimbatore, Kavitha moved to Chennai to train in acting at the Balu Mahendra Film Institute. There, she discovered that her years of Bharatanatyam had gifted her an extraordinary ability to express emotion through the body, a skill that translated naturally to screen performance. Her teachers noted her unusual capacity for stillness, the ability to hold a moment of silence and let it speak volumes. Her debut in the Tamil period drama Kovil Vasalil (2023), directed by Vetrimaaran's associate Shanmugam, cast her as a temple dancer in pre-independence Madras. The role demanded both technical dance mastery and deep emotional range, and Kavitha delivered on both counts. Her subsequent performance in the independent film Thanga Meenkal 2, a sequel to the acclaimed 2013 original, cemented her reputation as one of Tamil cinema's most promising classical actresses.
