Biography
Meera Nair was born into a family steeped in Kerala's rich artistic heritage. Her mother, a Mohiniyattam instructor at the Kerala Kalamandalam, and her father, a Carnatic music teacher, ensured that Meera's childhood was filled with the rhythms of classical art. She began learning Bharatanatyam at five, Mohiniyattam at eight, and discovered her soprano voice during her teenage years when she joined the school choir at Loyola School, Trivandrum.
Meera pursued a Bachelor of Fine Arts at the Kerala Kalamandalam, where she excelled in both dance and vocal performance. Her teachers recognized her unusual ability to inhabit characters through movement and song simultaneously, a skill that would later become her signature in cinema. After graduating, she moved to Kochi to be closer to the Malayalam film industry and enrolled in a six-month acting workshop at the Adishakti Laboratory for Theatre Arts in Puducherry.
Her film career began with a supporting role in Oru Kadal Kadha (2022), a Malayalam romantic drama directed by Anjali Menon, where her dance sequences were widely praised. Her breakthrough came with Paadunna Penkutty (2023), in which she played a young Carnatic singer fighting to be heard in a patriarchal musical family. The film's director, Jayaraj Rajasekharan, specifically cast Meera because she could perform the intricate vocal passages without dubbing, lending the film an authenticity that resonated with audiences.
Meera views her art as a continuum, where dance, music, and acting are not separate disciplines but different languages for the same emotional truth. She continues to perform Mohiniyattam at cultural festivals and is developing a one-woman musical theatre piece that weaves together Malayalam folk songs with contemporary choreography.
