Biography
Priya Menon discovered her passion for performance at the age of six, when her grandmother enrolled her in Bharatanatyam classes at the renowned Kalakshetra Foundation in Chennai. What began as a childhood hobby soon became a defining pursuit. By the time she was fourteen, Priya had performed at over fifty stages across Tamil Nadu and earned the prestigious Natya Kala Acharya junior scholarship. Her transition from classical dance to acting felt natural, driven by an insatiable desire to tell stories through movement and emotion.
After completing her B.A. in Dramatic Arts from the University of Madras, Priya trained extensively in method acting under the guidance of veteran theatre director R. Krishnamurthy at the Chennai Theatre Workshop. Her debut in the Tamil independent film Mazhai Neram (2021), directed by S. Raghavan, earned her immediate critical attention. Critics praised her portrayal of a young Devadasi navigating colonial-era Madras, calling it "a performance of extraordinary stillness and power."
Her subsequent roles in Vaanam Thotta Pookkal and the Hindi-language Sapno Ki Zameen showcased her range, moving effortlessly between Tamil art-house cinema and mainstream Bollywood productions. Priya is known for her meticulous preparation, often spending months immersing herself in the world of her characters. For her role in Pudhumai Pen, she lived in a rural fishing village for six weeks to understand the rhythms of coastal life.
Priya believes that Indian cinema is at an inflection point, where audiences are hungry for authentic, emotionally complex stories. She is committed to choosing projects that challenge both herself and the viewer, and she continues to practice Bharatanatyam daily, seeing it as the foundation of all her artistic expression.
