Biography
Ritika Mohanty was born in the shadow of the Lingaraja Temple in Bhubaneswar, and the temple's ancient carvings of dancing figures were her first introduction to the art that would define her life. She began Odissi training at age six at the Odissi Research Centre under guru Kumkum Mohanty, quickly demonstrating an innate understanding of the dance form's distinctive tribhanga posture and lyrical movement quality. By fourteen, she had performed at the Konark Dance Festival, one of India's most prestigious classical dance events.
After completing her M.A. in Dance from Utkal University, Ritika supplemented her classical training with studies in acting at the National School of Drama's Eastern Zone Centre in Kolkata. The combination of Odissi's expressive storytelling tradition and NSD's rigorous dramatic training gave her a unique performance toolkit. She returned to Bhubaneswar determined to put Odia cinema on the national map.
Her film debut in Konark (2023), an Odia period drama about the construction of the Sun Temple, directed by veteran Odia filmmaker Sabyasachi Mohapatra, was a landmark achievement. Ritika's portrayal of a devadasi who uses dance as resistance against oppression earned her the Odisha State Film Award for Best Actress. She followed this with a critically acclaimed role in the Hindi-Odia bilingual Nila Madhab, playing an archaeologist who discovers the spiritual power of ancient Odissi dance manuscripts.
