Biography
Rohit Menon never planned to be an actor. Growing up in Bengaluru's Jayanagar neighbourhood, he was the class clown who turned every school assembly into an impromptu comedy show. After completing an engineering degree from R.V. College of Engineering (which he describes as "the most expensive comedy writing course in India"), Rohit abandoned a software career to pursue stand-up comedy full-time. Within two years, he had become one of Bengaluru's most popular comics, selling out shows at venues like The Comedy Store and performing at the Bengaluru Comedy Festival.
Rohit's transition from stage comedy to screen acting began when Kannada director Rakshit Shetty invited him to audition for a supporting role in the comedy-drama Hosa Balu. Shetty saw in Rohit's stand-up work not just comedic timing but a deeper emotional intelligence. The audition led to the role, and Rohit's natural, unforced performance earned him a Karnataka State Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor, a remarkable achievement for a debut.
Emboldened by the experience, Rohit enrolled in an acting workshop at Rangayana, Mysore's renowned theatre repertory, where he trained under veteran Kannada actor Prakash Belawadi. The workshop helped him understand that comedy and drama are not opposites but complementary skills, both requiring absolute truthfulness. His subsequent roles in the Hindi web series Laughing Matters and the Kannada thriller Bere Loka demonstrated his growing range.
Rohit continues to perform stand-up regularly, viewing it as essential practice for his acting work. He believes that the vulnerability required to stand alone on a stage with a microphone and make strangers laugh is the same vulnerability that makes for compelling screen performances. He is currently developing a semi-autobiographical Kannada comedy film about the Bengaluru stand-up scene.
