Biography
Shalini Nambiar is one of the few women in India trained in the traditionally male-dominated art of Kathakali. Growing up in Thrissur, the cultural capital of Kerala, she was surrounded by the state's extraordinary performing arts heritage. Her father, a Kathakali artist at the Kerala Kalamandalam, broke convention by teaching his daughter the intricate mudras, footwork, and facial expressions of the art form. Shalini's natural aptitude was evident early, and by sixteen she was performing Kathakali at the Thrissur Pooram festival, earning both admiration and controversy.
Shalini pursued a B.F.A. in Theatre Arts at the University of Calicut, where she supplemented her Kathakali training with studies in contemporary physical theatre. A transformative workshop with the Grotowski Centre in Poland opened her eyes to the possibilities of combining Eastern classical forms with Western experimental techniques. She returned to Kerala determined to create work that honoured Kathakali's ancient traditions while speaking to modern audiences.
Her screen debut in Veera Vadhyar (2023), a Malayalam drama about a female Kathakali artist fighting for acceptance, was widely seen as a semi-autobiographical role. Director Lijo Jose Pellissery cast her specifically for her authentic Kathakali skills, and the film's eight-minute uncut Kathakali performance sequence was hailed as one of the most breathtaking scenes in recent Malayalam cinema. She followed this with the experimental physical theatre film Shareera Bhasha, which was entirely dialogue-free.
