Biography
Sneha Pillai's earliest memories are of watching Kathakali performances at the Sree Padmanabhaswamy Temple in Trivandrum, mesmerized by the elaborate costumes and the dancers' ability to convey entire epic narratives through gesture and expression alone. This early fascination with classical performance art set the course of her life. She began formal Mohiniyattam training at age seven under guru Sunanda Nair at the Trivandrum School of Fine Arts, quickly demonstrating an exceptional gift for the art form's characteristic lyrical grace.
Sneha's academic journey took her to the University of Kerala, where she earned a Master's degree in Theatre Arts with a thesis on the intersection of Mohiniyattam and contemporary feminist performance. During her university years, she also trained in Kudiyattam, one of the world's oldest surviving theatre traditions, at the Margi Theatre in Trivandrum. This deep grounding in Kerala's classical traditions gave Sneha a unique performance vocabulary that would later distinguish her screen work.
Her film career began with Manju Warrier's comeback vehicle Aami (2022), where Sneha played a young Mohiniyattam dancer in a pivotal supporting role. Director Kamal spotted her at a Mohiniyattam recital and was struck by her ability to hold an audience's attention through sheer presence. The role opened doors, leading to her critically acclaimed lead performance in Swathanthryam (2023), a Malayalam period drama set during Kerala's temple entry movement, directed by Adoor Gopalakrishnan's student Harikumar. Her portrayal of a Dalit woman fighting for the right to worship earned her the Kerala State Award for Best Actress.
Sneha is deeply committed to keeping Kerala's classical art forms alive and relevant. She teaches Mohiniyattam to young girls from disadvantaged backgrounds through a non-profit she co-founded, and she actively advocates for better working conditions and pay equity for women in the Malayalam film industry.
