Venkat Raman

Venkat Raman grew up in the port city of Visakhapatnam, where the dramatic coastline and industrial landscapes provided an ever-changing canvas for his growing obsession with visual storytelling. His father, a merchant navy officer, brought home a camera from one of his voyages when Venkat was ten, and the boy was immediately hooked. He spent his teenage years photographing Vizag's fishing communities, temple festivals, and the dramatic monsoon seas, building a portfolio that won him multiple state-level photography awards. After completing his B.Sc. in Visual Communication from Andhra University, Venkat moved to Chennai to study cinematography at the L.V. Prasad Film & TV Academy. His diploma film, a lyrical documentary about Vizag's shipbreaking industry, won the academy's Best Cinematography award and was selected for several documentary film festivals. But Venkat was drawn to both sides of the camera. He enrolled in acting classes at the Balu Mahendra Film Institute, where his cinematographer's understanding of framing and lighting gave his on-camera performances a distinctive spatial awareness. His dual debut as cinematographer and supporting actor in the Telugu indie Samudram (2023), a film about Vizag's fishing community directed by Nandini Reddy, drew on his intimate knowledge of the coastal world. His performance was praised for its understated naturalism, while his cinematography brought the film a luminous visual quality. He followed this with an acting role in the Telugu thriller Andhagaram, where his photographer's eye helped him create a visually precise performance.
