Biography
Zara Sheikh grew up in the bustling Jamia Nagar neighbourhood of Delhi, where she developed an early fascination with street culture and urban dance. While her classmates were learning Kathak and Bharatanatyam, Zara was teaching herself hip hop from YouTube videos in her bedroom, practicing popping and locking until the floor shook. By sixteen, she was competing in underground b-girl battles across Delhi and had earned a reputation as one of the capital's most dynamic young dancers. After completing her B.A. in Mass Communication from Jamia Millia Islamia, Zara joined the improv comedy troupe Improv Delhi, where she discovered that her dancer's instinct for reading the room and responding in the moment translated perfectly to improvisational performance. She trained in long-form improv under the troupe's founder and began performing at comedy festivals across India. Her film debut in Delhi Beats (2023), a Hindi musical drama directed by Zoya Akhtar's associate Reema Kagti, was a breakthrough moment for urban dance in Indian cinema. Playing a young Muslim woman from Old Delhi who uses hip hop as a means of self-expression, Zara brought raw authenticity to a role that resonated with a generation of young Indians. The film's dance battle sequences, choreographed in collaboration with international hip hop artists, became a cultural phenomenon. She followed this with the indie thriller Sheher Ki Awaaz, where her improv skills brought a spontaneous energy to her performance.
