What are the Official Video Standards for a HYBE Global Audition?

Why do so many talented performers get rejected before the scout even watches their full video? It’s usually a technical mistake.

If you are applying for HYBE (the label behind BTS, TXT, and NewJeans), your audition video is your only chance to make a first impression. Thousands of people apply every day. If your video is blurry, filtered, or poorly framed, the scout will skip it in seconds.

What are the non-negotiable rules for a HYBE self-tape in 2026? How do you ensure your video actually gets watched?

1. Why are filters strictly forbidden?

The #1 mistake applicants make is using "beauty filters" or heavy makeup. K-pop scouts aren't looking for a finished product; they are looking for a "clean slate." They need to see your natural facial features, your skin texture, and your bone structure to imagine how you will look under professional styling.

Rule: Zero filters. Minimal, natural makeup only. If the scout thinks you are hiding your face behind an algorithm, they will disqualify you.

2. Vocal vs. Dance: How should you frame the camera?

Most people record everything in vertical (portrait) mode because of TikTok and Reels. For a professional audition, this is often the wrong choice.

  • Vocal/Rap: Use Landscape (Horizontal) mode. Position the camera at eye level. The frame should show your head and shoulders clearly so they can see your expressions and your mouth movements.
  • Dance: Use Landscape mode but ensure it is a Full-Body shot. If your feet or hands go out of the frame during a move, the scout can't evaluate your lines and proportions.

3. What is the "Golden Lighting" for auditions?

You don't need a professional studio, but you do need light. Shadows across your face make you look tired or unapproachable.

The Fix: Stand facing a window during the day. Natural sunlight is the best way to show your natural skin tone. If you are recording at night, use a ring light or two lamps—one on each side of the camera—to eliminate shadows.

4. Can you use background music for vocals?

This is a common question. For the vocal category, HYBE typically prefers Acapella (no background music). They want to hear your raw pitch, your breath control, and your tone without a loud instrumental track covering up your mistakes.

If you must use an instrumental, keep it very quiet. Never use a track that already has vocals or "backing vocals" on it.

5. How long should the video be?

Scouts watch hundreds of videos a day. They do not have time for a 5-minute introduction.

The Strategy: Keep your video under 60 seconds.

  • First 5 seconds: A clear, quick introduction (Name, Age, Height, Location).
  • Remaining 55 seconds: Your strongest performance. Don't "warm up"—start with your best high note or your most impressive dance move immediately.

6. The "Environment" Check

Is your room messy? Is there a pile of clothes on the bed behind you? A cluttered background is distracting.

The Fix: Use a plain, solid-colored wall. If you don't have one, hang a plain sheet. The scout should be looking at you, not your room.

Preparing for a HYBE audition is about discipline as much as it is about talent. When you follow these technical standards, you signal to the scouts that you are professional, coachable, and ready to enter the trainee system.
