For decades, international film distribution struggled with the language barrier. Audiences either read subtitles or watched dubbed versions recorded by different actors.

AI dubbing and voice cloning now offer an alternative, allowing regional films to reach international audiences without traditional dubbing.

What is AI dubbing?

AI dubbing translates a film's dialogue into another language while maintaining the original actor's tone and pitch.

If an actor yells in a scene, the software generates the translated audio using a model of that actor's voice to replicate the intensity of the performance.

Visual dubbing

The process also applies to video. Visual dubbing tools alter the original actor's mouth movements on screen to match the phonetics of the translated dialogue.

This produces a film where the actors appear to speak the target language, avoiding the mismatched lip movements typical of traditional dubbing.

Under the 2026 SAG-AFTRA union guidelines, actors receive compensation when their voice is cloned for dubbing. The standard practice requires a licensing agreement where the actor signs a consent rider. This permits the studio to use their voice model specifically for translation. The actor receives a residual or a buyout fee for each localized version of the film.

Non-union projects lack these strict guidelines. Actors working on independent films should review the Name, Image, Likeness, and Voice clauses in their contracts carefully.

AI dubbing tools are changing how films are distributed, making it possible for a movie filmed in one country to find an audience in another.
