Producers writing a casting brief
Casting call template: write a brief actors can apply to
A casting call should explain who is hiring, what the project is, which roles are open, where and when the work happens, what it pays, and how to apply. Use a separate role description for each character. ShortCine’s casting form supports project details, multiple roles, compensation fields, deadlines, and role-specific application questions.

Use a project brief and separate role briefs
Start with the working title, production type, a short synopsis, and the team responsible for the call. Explain where filming takes place and which dates are confirmed. Include rehearsal expectations if they affect availability.
Then describe each character. Give the information an actor needs to assess fit, including performance language or a particular skill when relevant. Keep optional preferences separate from conditions that the production actually requires.
Explain the terms before asking for a tape
State whether the role is paid, unpaid, or has another arrangement. Explain the proposed amount or how it will be agreed, and describe travel and meals separately. If terms are still being decided, say so rather than leaving an applicant to guess.
List the requested material and a deadline with a time zone. Explain the intended next step, such as reviewing profiles before requesting a scene. Only request personal information you need for the current stage.
Turn the brief into an application page
On ShortCine, enter the project details and add each role. Include role-specific questions where you need an answer not already supplied by the profile, such as availability for a specified date range.
Check the published brief from an applicant’s point of view. Make sure the dates, compensation description, and application route agree. When a project detail changes, update the call and communicate the change to affected applicants.
Common questions
- Can one casting call have multiple roles?
- ShortCine supports multiple roles within a casting call. Give each role its own description and any necessary role-specific questions so applicants can identify the right opportunity.
- What deadline should I put on a casting call?
- Choose a deadline that leaves enough time to review and arrange callbacks. State the date, time, and time zone, and avoid implying that applications remain open after the published cutoff.
- Is a casting call template a contract?
- No. A casting brief explains an opportunity and how to apply. Confirm the final role, compensation, dates, and other terms separately with the selected performer.
