Cloud-Based Post-Production: The End of the Editing Bay

A decade ago, finishing a movie meant booking a physical room. The director, the editor, and the colorist would crowd into a dark suite in Los Angeles or Mumbai, passing around heavy hard drives.

Now, that room is mostly empty. Cloud workflows have split the process across time zones.

How it works

Productions used to ship hard drives full of raw footage back and forth. Now, they upload the proxy files and raw media straight to a cloud server.

Editors log into virtual machines from home. They do not rely on their local laptop to render anything. Instead, they stream the interface of a server located hundreds of miles away.

Why the industry moved to the cloud

The shift changed who can work together. A director in New York can hire an editor in London, a color grader in Seoul, and a sound mixer in Toronto. They can all open the same project file at the same time.

It also fixed a major security problem. Mailing hard drives via courier means risking a leak in transit. Cloud servers use strict encryption and access logs, which makes tracking who viewed what much simpler.

Directors still want to give immediate feedback. They do this by streaming the editor's timeline on a tablet. They can draw notes directly on the frame, replicating the experience of sitting on the couch behind the editor.

The internet speeds required for cloud editing

Remote editors often worry about internet requirements for this kind of setup.

Since the editor is streaming video output rather than downloading the raw files, a stable 50 Mbps download speed and a ping under 30 milliseconds will handle the job.

If you want smooth playback without compression artifacts, you will want a wired connection at 100 Mbps or higher. Upload speed hardly matters for the editor, unless they also happen to be the one ingesting the footage from set.
