Self-tapes shouldn't be this painful
You record the audition, upload it somewhere, email a link, and pray it doesn't expire before the casting director gets to it. There's a better way.
After COVID, self-tape auditions went from occasional to expected. Almost every casting call in India now asks for one. That part makes sense (it saves everyone a trip to Andheri). What doesn't make sense is how we're still handling the files.
Here's what most actors do: record on their phone, trim the clip, upload it to Google Drive or WeTransfer, copy the link, paste it into an email or a WhatsApp message, and send it to the casting director. Sometimes the link works. Sometimes Drive asks for access permissions. Sometimes WeTransfer expires after seven days and nobody tells you. You've already moved on to prepping for the next audition. The CD opens the link on day eight and gets a dead page.
And then there's the quality problem. WhatsApp compresses video down to nothing. A well-lit, carefully acted scene turns into a pixelated mess on the other end. Google Drive works better but buffering on Indian mobile networks makes it unwatchable half the time. If you're outside a metro city, uploading a 500MB file on your connection can take the better part of an afternoon.
The worst part is you never know what happened after you hit send. Did the casting director watch it? Did they watch ten seconds and close the tab? Did they even receive it? You just wait. No read receipt, no view count. Nothing to go on.
ShortCine fixes this. You upload your self-tape audition directly: either to your actor profile where any casting director can see it, or as a submission to a specific casting call. The video stays on the platform. Links don't expire and format issues disappear. It plays on any phone, any network. And if the file is large, our uploader handles bad connections without corrupting the video halfway through.
Upload once, submit anywhere
Add self-tapes to your profile or attach them directly to casting call submissions. No Drive links or WeTransfer URLs to worry about.
Works on Indian bandwidth
Resumable uploads that handle patchy connections. Your self-tape won't fail at 90% because your wifi dropped for two seconds.
Know when it's been watched
See when a casting director views your submission. No more guessing whether your audition tape actually reached anyone.
“I lost a callback for a web series because my WeTransfer link expired over the weekend. The CD tried to open it on Monday and got nothing. By the time I re-sent it, they'd already moved forward. That doesn't happen on ShortCine.”
